The Knot Best of Weddings 2018

The votes are in and Steele Hill Resorts has been named Best of Weddings for 2018 by TheKnot.com. This award would not have been possible without votes from all of the amazing couples and their guests we have been able to work with over the past year. So, we want to start off by thanking our wonderful brides and grooms. Steele Hill sincerely appreciates all of the positive reviews and comments that make us realize why we are in the wedding business. There is nothing more beautiful and rewarding than being able to play such an important role in a couple’s lifelong memories.

We also want to give a big shout out to our amazing Wedding and Event Coordinator, Penny Miller. Penny has held this position for the past four years. She prides herself on coordinating every detail of your special day from decorations down to the schedule of events. We can’t say enough positive things about her, and to get a better understanding of how great she is, here is a recent bride’s experience with Penny’s service:

“Penny was amazing. I can’t say enough awesome things about her! She made everything seem so easy, and you could tell she really cares about each and every wedding she helps plan. She even snuck me around a corner away from everyone when I had a stress meltdown the night before! This was the perfect wedding and it didn’t completely break the bank! It was priced very, very well for everything that we got! Book, book, book is all I can say :)” – Skye M

Steele Hill offers a variety of packages to meet a couple’s budget and needs. With different onsite venue locations, breath-taking views of the New Hampshire Lakes Region, a wide variety of amenities and an onsite restaurant, there is no need to look further. But don’t take our advice, look at the reviews and decide for yourself. If you are interested in having your wedding at our resort, check out our wedding pages here to inquire, or join us this summer for our annual I Do with a View Bridal Show. Lastly, we want to thank The Knot for presenting us with this award. It is a huge honor to serve such wonderful people on their special day.

Thanksgiving Dinner in New Hampshire

Thanksgiving is an American, family tradition dating back to the 1600’s. At Steele Hill Resorts we have been celebrating this tradition with a Thanksgiving buffet at The Hilltop Restaurant for over 40 years. Join us for all the fixings from delicious roasted turkey, to all the sides you can imagine. With a smorgasbord of dessert options you won’t leave this meal feeling hungry.

The Hilltop Restaurant sits atop Steele Hill and offers beautiful views of Lake Winnisquam, Lake Winnipesaukee, and the Belknap Mountain Range. With floor to ceiling windows the view is sure to enhance your holiday dining experience in the Lakes Region.

The buffet menu includes appetizers such as fruits, cheese, nuts, crackers, a relish tray with assorted pickles and olives, warm breads with whipped butter, and a wonderful poached pear salad. Main dishes offer a roast turkey with pan gravy a hand carved smoked ham with rum raisin sauce, a slow roasted sirloin with au jus, and baked haddock with lobster cream sauce. Turkey may be the star of the feast but nothing makes a thanksgiving meal like the sides and we have you covered with favorites from smashed Yukon potatoes, roasted acorn squash, green bean casserole, steamed root veggies, peas and pearl onion, and corn fritters with apple butter.

You can’t forget about the desserts as there will be bread pudding, assorted cheese cakes, apple crisp, an ice cream station, and all of your favorite homemade pies.

Instead of cooking your Thanksgiving meal at home bring the family on up to Steele Hill for a Thanksgiving they are sure to remember. Sit back and enjoy spending the time with your loved ones as we take away the stress of cooking.

Meet Our Activities Director

Steele Hill Resorts offers an array of activities each week, put on by our fabulous activities director Nancy. The activity schedule goes up each Friday and there is something for everyone. From Teddy Bear Mountain, to frog racing, and s’mores there is never a dull moment up on the hill. Check out our interview with the long-time activities director Nancy below.

Tell me a little bit about yourself and how long you have been with Steele Hill.

I am starting my 9th year working for Steele Hill. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in graphic arts from the University of Maryland and have raised a beautiful family of four children with my husband. In my past I have been a girl scout leader, cub scout leader, and a classroom mother for over 12 years. Before Steele Hill I worked for the Smithsonian as an exhibit specialist in Washington D.C. where I did everything from picking out the wall color, to the placement of the designs. In my spare time, I love being outside whether its hiking, fishing, or camping. So, that combination of love for the outdoors and art made my position as an activity director the perfect fit.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I love making memories and being a part of a guest’s memories whether it’s a family or individual. It’s where I feel like I am making a difference in people’s lives, even if it’s just a small memory, the small moments are the ones that can mean the most in the long run. When a guest comes on vacation they want to come get away, relax, and be carefree and I can help achieve that. Since I have worked here over the course of 9 years it’s amazing to see some children I met at the beginning of my time who are now heading off to college, and they still come say hi to me and join in on some of the activities I put on, and that is rewarding knowing that myself, and Steele Hill can hold a part in their memories of growing up.

What has been the best feel good moment of your time here?

I remember this one time I added knitting to the activity scheduled. Unsure if anyone would show up, I had one middle aged man come in and told me he wanted to learn how to knit. He told me how growing up his Grandmother was a big knitter and always wanted to teach her grandchildren. He had promised her that one day she could teach him, but she had passed away before he ever got to learn, so he had it on his bucket list to one day learn how to knit. He was the only one that showed up that day, but we sat down for the full hour and I taught him how to knit, and when he finished he stood up with a big smile on his face and thanked me.

What makes the children most excited?

For the kids, I tend to get crafts that parents otherwise wouldn’t get at home. And I mean the really messy ones that involve glitter, sequins, and colored sand etc. I dump it all out on the table and let them have free range. They can get as messy as they want and its okay because they aren’t at home. They also love the wildlife we have here at Steele Hill. We have a stocked pond, and I will take the kids out to catch frogs and then we will do a frog race, the kids get to go outside and really get their hands dirty, they get so excited about that.

How do you come up with the activities?

Whatever I come up with I know it has to be successful in one hour. I can’t occupy guests all day with a four-hour craft because they have all of these other plans, I always keep the guests’ time in mind. I am not running a summer camp, I am only here to enhance their experience, so anything too complicated might deter from that. For example, one activity I do is creating dream catchers, for the little kids they can just make their own path without learning the exact techniques, but for the older ones they can take time to learn the knots and strings correctly. I also always have a Plan B and C to occupy guests if they finish an activity early.

How do the activities at Steele Hill set us apart from other hospitality experiences?

In my own personal experience, I have noticed that when I have been at other resorts their activities only occur once a day or maybe only every other day, and this is normally only during their peak season. Here at Steele Hill I do multiple activities 5 days a week, 12 months a year. I am also the only person putting on activities here, and I have been here for so long that on a personal level I get to know reoccurring guests and year after year. It is unique in the sense that they know who I am and I know who they are, it’s a family owned resort so when you come here that’s the feeling we want to embody.

Also at Steele Hill the cool part is that you can try all of the activities and amenities we have here for zero to minimal cost. So, if you wanted to try out golf you can do so for free here and you might come away with a new hobby for life, or if I am running a jewelry making activity I have some guests say “this was so much easier than I thought, where can I buy the supplies?” Guests are able to try something new and can take what they learned from Steele Hill and enjoy something for the rest of their life they may not have otherwise discovered.

New Hampshire Fall Foliage Vacation

During the foliage season, the drive up Steele Hill Road offers all the breath-taking colors of fall in New Hampshire. It is often those small moments that set the tone and build the suspense for what is sure to be a worthwhile view of one of the best fall foliage vantage points in New Hampshire. After check-in, head to your room where you can unwind, and use this guide on how to make the most out of your leaf-peeping getaway to Steele Hill Resorts. Start off your vacation walking along one of the five hiking trails we have surrounding the resort. Breathe in the clear, crisp air of the New Hampshire country side as you walk through the woods, it will give you the opportunity to see the foliage and nature up close and personal. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled and you might even see a deer grazing in the fields or an owl perched up in a tree.

After a long walk, grab lunch near the big windows at the on-site Hilltop Restaurant. Admire the beautiful fall colors overlooking Lake Winnisquam the Belknap mountain range. Enjoy a hearty soup or the mac n cheese to warm yourself up for a cool fall day.

Head into town to Smith Apple Orchard, and pick your own apples; if you haven’t done this before, it is a must! There is nothing better than picking a local farm fresh apple straight from the tree and biting into it. Tractors tow you through the farm to the right trees and you are free to pick as many or as little as you want. Make sure to grab some granny smith apples so you can head back to the resort and bake some fresh apple crisp in the comfort of your own kitchen. In New Hampshire, apple picking is a favorite fall activity and your family i sure to enjoy quality time together in the countryside.

Once back at the resort, drop your apples off and head back outside, what better way to soak in the fall air than sitting back and leisurely catching a few fish in our fully stocked catch and release pond. If you didn’t bring fishing supplies, our on-campus convenience store, The Market, has everything you need.

After a busy afternoon outdoors, head back to your room and cook up some dinner for the whole family, and don’t forget to make that apple crisp. Enjoy playing a card game, or grab a movie from the check-in office to relax with after the long day. If you’re up for it, head outside and enjoy our 4-season oversized jacuzzi, where you can warm up on a cool fall night.

Steele Hill Resorts provides you with everything you need for an afternoon of fun with the family. On a beautiful summer day, no one wants to be stuck inside. Cornhole, a game for all ages can be played anywhere and is easy to learn. Gather your family and get into teams of two players, you can play leisurely or tournament style. Just ask for the boards by the pool and a staff member will take them out for you. Pay attention to the activity schedule and we may even be holding a cornhole tournament under the white event tent while you are here.

For those looking for a bit of summer nostalgia, head on over to the horseshoe pits. The game of horseshoes, like cornhole, is a great way to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family. Get into teams of two and alternate trying to get the horseshoe around the stake. The horseshoes are located in front of the northwing of the original resort property. With views overlooking beautiful Lake Winnisquam and the Belknap Mountains, this is a great place to spend a summer day.

It’s a tradition to have a beverage in hand while playing lawn games, and there’s nothing better on a hot summer day than a tasty drink. Fireworks Festivities at Steele Hill

Fireworks at Steele Hill
A 30+ year tradition in the making, nothing quite says “I love America” like Cotton Candy, BBQ and Fireworks. So grab your family and friends and head to Steele Hill Resorts to celebrate Independence. This year’s festivities will be hosted on July 3rd and feature fireworks, a BBQ, and live music starting at 3pm.

For any newcomers to the party, the fireworks display at Steele Hill offers a very unique vantage point. Guests are invited to sit on the lawn facing the view near the resort outdoor patio while an impressive fireworks display is shot off further down the slope of the golf course. The show will end up being at about eye level so no need to go home feeling like you just got stuck sitting in the front row nose bleed section of the movie theater. These fireworks are up close and personal. The other unique feature of our celebration is that since we have such a great view you can actually see other towns fireworks going off across the Lakes Region. Really get into the spirit of independence as the horizon lights up with celebratory explosions.

Pre-Fireworks, join us for hot dogs and burgers under the outdoor tent, if you are 21 years or older, beer will also be served. For the kids, we will be selling glow sticks and sparklers, along with fried dough and cotton candy. It wouldn’t be a celebration without music, so on the Hilltop Restaurant deck DJ Mike will be rocking the tunes and the Sweet Bloods will be performing live music under the outdoor event tent.

Don’t forget to bring something to sit on and a sweatshirt in case of a cool summer breeze. The Atlas firework show will begin to shoot off between 9:15 and 9:30pm. With some of the best views in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region, you aren’t going to want to miss this spectacular event. We’ll see you there!

Taps Galore at Tova’s Tavern

beer_taps
Beer enthusiasts are beginning to notice the not so hidden gem down at Tova’s Tavern. With the addition of our new tap system and an emphasis on quality microbrews, the beer selection is quickly becoming a major attraction in the restaurant. Our staff has doubled down on finding the perfect mix to tickle your fancy and provide a unique tasting experience. Guests are invited to sample the different brews to help determine the perfect choice for their particular tastes.

Tova’s Tavern has been serving thirsty guests for decades and with the beer revolution sweeping the country some upgrades to the selection were an obvious fit. Beyond the enhanced offering at the bar, the resort has also embraced the new beer culture by hosting the annual A Brew with a View brewfest. The festival brings together a variety of regional microbrews from around New England as well as like-minded fans of craft beer. The brewfest offers a unique opportunity to research new ideas for the bar and get feedback from guests attending the event. It is really a win-win for our “research” team.

With all the attention given to our beer selection, it’s no wonder Tova’s has been getting some extra attention these days. Just remember, if you plan a visit, don’t forget to pet the stuffed husky on the last bar stool. The tradition is guaranteed to bring good luck for years to come.
