Breaking Ground – Resort Expansion

Steele Hill Resorts responds to consumer demand by breaking ground on the second building in the Steele Hill South project. With three years of outstanding growth in rental business and the recent launch of the Steele Hill Vacation Club, the decision was made to expand resort inventory to meet the rise in demand.

In coordination with lead financing partner Bank of New Hampshire and project management by Conneston Construction, the new development is set to deliver marquee inventory to expand guest capacity at our 500 acre resort. Stewart Associates Architects also provided professional guidance to incorporate significant improvements based on guest feedback.

Positioned along the golf course overlooking prime views of the Belknap Mountains and lakes below, the new building features an extended footprint and hosts full two bedroom units in lockout configurations. These cutting-edge rooms offer the ability to service demand in the hotel suite market while also meeting the needs of guest looking for a full vacation condo rentals. Exploring the History of our New Hampshire Resort

Steele Hill Resorts, formerly known as the Inn at Steele Hill, holds a special place in the history of New Hampshire. During the roaring twenties and into the forties, the granite state witnessed a rise in popularity as a tourist destination. Residents living in and around metropolitan areas in southern New England began seeking out a vacation experience that was more in touch with nature. The expansive countryside of New Hampshire was the perfect destination for wealthy urbanites to stretch their legs and smell the fresh air.

In 1937, Nelson Smith, a Boston Jeweler, purchase the Steele Hill dairy farm with the goal of becoming a gentlemen farmer. Following the devastating hurricane of 1938 that ravaged the lakes region, Smith saw the abundance of downed timber on his newly purchased land as an opportunity to get in on the tourism business. Construction on the original Inn at Steele Hill began in earnest, providing a much needed boost to the local economy in the years following the great depression. Matching its rustic country architecture with an abundance of amenities and spectacular views of the lakes and mountains below, the Inn soon became a hotspot for tourist. The development of the resort followed in the footsteps of Smith’s original vision. Many of today’s guests share the same desire to relax in a country setting as visitors from years past.

For some candid interviews from local residents and employees during the early days of the resort, check out the mini-documentary we produced.

Travel Show Features Steele Hill – The Chef’s Plate

With our attractive combination of spacious rooms, abundant amenities and excellent cuisine, Steele Hill has become a favorite destination for many vacationers. This summer the Chef’s Plate, a weekly TV show that covers restaurants and hospitality businesses, approached us to showcase the property.

Helen Ryba, the show’s host and producer, was originally interested in focusing on the Hilltop Restaurant and our wedding offerings. As we shared the full potential of the resort, the episode quickly expanded from a 5 minute feature to a full-length episode. The show was a great opportunity to distill our best attributes down to a visually stunning, professionally produced showcase. For an insider look at what makes Steele Hill Resorts stand out, grab some popcorn and watch the full episode above. We hope you enjoy.

Adventures by the Pond at our NH Resort

With the sheer variety of amenities at our New Hampshire Resort, who would have thought that the pond is often the biggest draw? Golfers love the views from our 9 hole course. The new, full-sized basketball courts have been a huge hit and the west indoor pool is what we are known for, but often times, on those bright and sunny summer days, visitors flock to the resort’s large fishing pond.

In part, the popularity is driven by our activities director showing kids and adults alike all of the wildlife that calls the pond home. From the resident snapping turtles to the stocked rainbow trout and the old bull frogs, Steele Hill’s fishing pond can be a great substitute for a trip to the aquarium. Oftentimes guests will get a chance to get up close and personal with the resident animals.

This year, Brianna, one of our luckiest guests, was able to catch the biggest crayfish on record at Steele Hill. While the picture doesn’t quite do it justice, this king of crustaceans measured out at almost 7 inches long. Good job Brianna and thanks for helping us release him back into the water. Future guest are bound to be in for a shock when they think they see a lobster strolling along the bottom.

Local Wildlife at our NH resort

The panoramic view from the observation tower at Steele Hill West gives you a glimpse of the wonders that Mother Nature has to offer in and around our NH resort, but only a walk along our trails or a quiet morning stroll through the grounds will give you opportunities to view some of the animals that thrive in this mountainous region of the Granite State. From black bears to wild turkeys, we have it all here at Steele Hill. If you’re staying with us for a while, please make it a point to check out the local wildlife.

Don’t get us wrong. We’re not suggesting you go forage with a family of bears or track down one of the fisher cats we occasionally see in the back woods. Safety must come first, but if you travel along our well-marked trails you should be fine. Making sure you have some people along with you is a good idea, at least to grab a good picture if the opportunity presents itself. It’s extremely rare for any wild animal to approach people this close to a NH resort. You will, of course, need to keep the noise levels down if you want to spot some of the rare and beautiful woodland bird species that can be found here.

Before you venture into the woods, check out the golf course just south of the Inn. In the spring you’ll see a flock of robins gathered along its slopes, true harbingers of warmer weather soon to come. If you’re lucky you may even spot a deer or our resident fox and in the summer you might just get to meet our course woodchuck. No need to worry about him if you’re playing a round of nine. He just likes to watch. Like all creatures here at Steele Hill, we consider him family too.

Venture behind the registration building, and you’ll find an equally diverse group of species in our fishing pond. Yes, that is a large snapping turtle you see hovering just below the surface and the creature you see skimming through the water is an otter. They both live there in harmony with other turtles, fish, frogs, and whoever decides they want to hang out along the banks, including our guests, many of whom spend hours by the pond both with and without fishing rods.

Have you ever encountered a wild turkey? Don’t get too close, especially if you happen to catch old Tom Turkey with his tail fanned out helping a line of his more feminine feathered friends across the road between the basketball courts and the carriage house. He doesn’t mind showing off his charges, but don’t startle him. You might be in for a surprise. We recommend you do what the rest of us do. Kick back, relax, and wonder at the marvels Mother Nature has provided for you. Our NH resort at Steel Hill has plenty of them to offer.

The Fish have Arrived at our NH Resort

Practice your cast, pack your bags and bring your cameras. The fish have arrived at Steele Hill Resorts. Here at the hill we are getting ready for another busy season of family fun and stocking the pond is one of our annual rituals to kick things off. Last week Hy-On-A-Hill Trout Farm dropped off 170 of the liveliest 8 to 10 inch rainbow trout they had in stock. The recent school vacation period has been a great opportunity for would-be anglers to test their skills and reel in the big one from our large pond.

Sadly Old Goliath, the monster fish that many guests have spied trolling the depths over the years, passed away. While the grounds crew had a moment of silence removing the 7 plus pound remains of our resident “big one”, there are plenty of new fish to take his place. Surely a new king of the deep will move up the ranks to fill his shoes. Either way, it is going to be a great year to catch (and release) some fish up at Steele Hill Resorts.

So make sure to bring you fishing pole and get ready for a relaxing day catching some fish under a wide open New Hampshire sky. If you are lucky you may even get a picture of Ralphy the resident snapping turtle.
